What Help Might a Loved One Need to Recover From a Stroke?

by Yolanda Hall

When a loved one needs assistance to recover from a stroke, it's hoped that any required assistance will only be a temporary measure. And this can certainly be the case for many of those affected. What form will this assistance take?

The Essential First Months

For many people recovering from a stroke, the most distinct improvements occur within the first six months. Everyone is different, and full recovery may require years. For some patients—particularly those whose episode was especially debilitating, or whose health was already compromised prior to the stroke, full recovery may not be possible. But many patients will find that most assistance will be needed during those first few months, and ideally, this will be a time of noticeable progress.

Practical in Nature

Home care for someone recovering from a stroke is practical in nature. Your loved one will need assistance with personal care, such as bathing and perhaps using the toilet. They'll also need help maintaining their home (cleaning), as well as with basic domestic tasks, such as meal preparation. Your loved one will also need help getting to and from various rehabilitation sessions, like physiotherapy, or speech therapy—in addition to any medical checkups. The frequency and intensity of these rehabilitation sessions (as well as their precise nature) will vary from person to person.

Lighten Your Load

You may want to be on hand for your loved one's recovery, available to assist in every way you can. And while you can offer assistance on an ongoing basis, it may not be practical for this to be a full-time arrangement, nor can you be responsible for round-the-clock care without help. You undoubtedly have other commitments, such as work, and perhaps childcare. Other family members may be able to help, but a qualified home care service can lighten your load while ensuring the highest quality of care—from someone with prior experience caring for a patient recuperating from a stroke.

Tapering Off

The essence of the process is that assistance offered by you, other family members, and a home care service provider (with the best results coming from a joint effort) will progressively taper off. As mentioned, everyone's recovery is different, but those first few months will hopefully see your loved one regain their independence, meaning that outside assistance should be needed less and less—until it's no longer needed at all.

In a best-case scenario, home care for someone recovering from a stroke will only need to be a temporary measure.

About Me

Home Health Care is Amazing

Yo! My name is Rebecca. I have started this blog so I can give a shout out to everyone about amazing home health care is. I first came across home health care services when my grandmother became unwell. She had been admitted to a local medical facility and spent 6 months receiving care. When she left the hospital, I realised that she would need some extra help looking after herself so I contacted a home health care company. They are absolutely fantastic. The staff provide first-class care for my grandmother and she is very happy. I hope you enjoy reading this blog.
